Compliance Information

A quick rundown on what makes your RatKat road-ready - and when it’s best kept to the backyard track.

The Short Version

In most of Australia, your e-bike is considered legal for public roads and bike paths if it meets these key rules:

  • Pedal-Assist Only: The motor only kicks in while you’re pedalling.
  • Speed Limit: Power assistance must cut out at 25 km/h.
  • Throttle: Throttle power is permitted at speeds up to 6km/h to get started. After this you must pedal to activate the motor assistance.
  • Helmet: Required by law in all states and territories..
  • Passengers: Carrying passengers is only legal if the e-bike is designed to do so (e.g., our models with extended saddle and rear passenger footpegs).
  • Local Rules: Each state has small differences - check yours below before you roll.

No license. No registration. Just pedal, assist, and ride responsibly.

Road-Legal vs Off-Road

We sell two types of e-bikes:

  • Road-Legal Models - built to meet Australian public-road standards (EN15194).
  • Private Property / Off-Road Models: higher wattage setups for fun on your own track, farm, or land.

If your bike exceeds 250W continuous output (500W in some states), or you ride with throttle alone, it’s legal for private property only

Before using these vehicles, check the applicable local laws relating to your intended use of the vehicle on roads and road-related areas.
